How to style DIY denim shorts! 6 different outfits!

As the calendar turns to the month of September, we have officially entered the fall season. Sooner than later, the temperatures will drop, the leaves will change color, and something will happen with daylight saving time and how dark outside gets at what time or whatever.

But, before we get to any of that, we can still embrace the slivers of warm weather before they fade into the cold abyss. And in order to maximize on the remaining heat, I’m going to show you guys some great and diverse outfits that you can put together with those new shorts that you all created from my denim pants to shorts tutorial! Today I show you how to style DIY denim shorts with 6 different outfits!

Now I’m not going to dive too deep into the subject matter, just going to describe what I’m wearing and an appropriate situation in which you can don such outfits! Let’s get into how to style DIY denim shorts with these 6 different outfits!

1. Rugged skater look!

This look pretty much describes Saturday afternoon while drinking a beer with the boys at our favorite pub. Maybe the simplest look. We’ve got some woodland printed Nike SB dunks, a pair of olive green Marino wool calf-length socks and we pick back up the green in my trusty camp bucket hat that I’ve owned for years. We contrast the green with these dark wash denim shorts and a simple grey graphic T. Want to spice things up a bit, throw on a few accessories and you’ve got a complete look that says I just rolled out of bed and yet I still look better than you.

2. The pool party goer who doesn’t want to expose his toes.

If you’ve attended a couple of pool parties, especially predominantly black ones, then there’s a good chance that at least one was filled with a bunch of guys in denim shorts and sneakers. Rarely can you spot any water appropriate attire. If you’re one of the said guys, or you just so happen to find yourself trying to fit in, then here is a foolproof outfit that anyone can get away with. Since it’s still hot as balls outside, you’d probably want to stay away from darker colors.

In this case, I pair an off white, creme graphic T with the white shorts from my YouTube video. I then compliment the white by wearing my peach Puma Clyde sneakers and my peach dad hat. It’s a perfect summer outfit for those who don’t want to wear anything water ready but still would like to remain as cool as possible. Toss in a simple chain and a watch to bring everything together.

3. The friend who thinks he’s more fashion forward than everyone else!

Ok, so this look leans a bit into the “big clothes are kind of making a comeback” trend. This shirt is a bit oversized as it is a size large and I typically wear a size medium. Now, because of its severe length, I opted to layer it with the grey t-shirt from the first outfit and then tuck it into the same dark wash denim shorts. The look plays on one of my favorite style combos and that’s wearing contrasting sizes.

What I mean by that is taking a piece that may be bigger than what you would typically wear, and combining it with another piece that is well fitted, in this case, the denim shorts. This creates a nice contrast in size that is pleasant to the eyes. I make the outfit more interesting by bringing out the yellow in the shirt with my mostly yellow socks and my gold Nike Air Max 1s. Cap things off (pun so intended) with my black, red, and yellow Houston rockets cap and you’ve got the look of a trendy hypebeast, minus the plastered brand logos. This look is great for grabbing lunch with a friend or for a day of shopping.

4. When wearing your teams jersey just isn’t enough!

Your baseball team should be honored that they have a fan who gets as fly as this when the games on and you’re watching it at the local brewery. Not everyone thinks to bring out the smallest accent colors in the jersey with a solid t-shirt of that very same color. But you did. Not everybody is thinking of picking up the accent color in the sneakers, thus allowing the orange of the jersey to stand proudly on its own. But you did.

This look is the ultimate sports fan outfit. It takes a frowned upon base (baseball jersey) and completely fleshes it out by using it as an outer layer to a hot sky blue t-shirt that brings out the hot sky blue accents in the Marlins colors in the biggest way. I continue to go all out with the blue by adding multi-colored blue socks. Then we tone things down with the black in the shoes(even though they are still loud) my black hat and a black watch. I think this look tiptoes the line of doing too much and doing just enough in a very interesting way. By my estimations, it should result in at least an extra home run per game.

5. Grilling at a backyard picnic.

Who says that manning the grill means that you have to dress like someone’s uncle who recently celebrated his 55th birthday? Well, I say to hell with that! Bright colors are always best when combating the sun’s heat, and no color gets brighter than white. Here I broke out the white pants now shorts from the DIY tutorial and decided to elevate things a bit by wearing a polo from Ralph Lauren. Pair that with my Birkenstock like slides and you’ve got a very chill, yet put together outfit for any backyard activity. Swap our the slides for a pair of casual slip-on sneakers, throw on a straw hat, and look out world!

6. Got my Vans on but they look like sneakers!

T-shirt? Check. Shorts? Check. Vans? Check. Hmmm, something seems to be missing though. Aaaahhh I know, a flannel. Now the outfit feels complete. It’s amazing what a simple act of layering can do. Now you look more interesting. Compliment the clothes with a wooden necklace and some accessories to really bring everything full circle. The shoes still carry the heavy lifting and stand out in the best way, but the supporting cast does their part as well. Comfort, meet style.
