Air Jordan Flint 13 style guide!

As a sneakerhead, we all have those few kicks that we hold in grail status. The few that you keep on a pedestal, that brings so much joy into your life, every time you slip them onto your feet. Well, today I want to share with you one of my grails and my second favorite sneaker ever. The Air Jordan Flint 13! My god do I love this freaking piece of footwear! Without further ado, let’s jump into my Air Jordan Flint 13 style guide!

Now, I’m going to pull the curtains back just a tiny bit. The flints in this post aren’t the pair that released a few weeks ago. The pair that I’m wearing is actually the retro from 2010. You know, the release that didn’t include reflective material on the blue overlay.

I’m pretty sure you’re thinking, “oh my goodness Meshach those look brand new.”

I know they do.

And thank you.

I’ve probably worn these shoes a gajillion number of times and I want to show off my favorite ways to rock em. So let’s get into this!

1. White tee and jeans!

Doesn’t get anymore simple than this folks. Pair of slim fitting jeans and a crisp white tee. Now, besides the obvious fact that slim fitting jeans are the way to go with any kind of jean, they also bring out the absolute best of the 13s shape. The 13 stands tall in its construction, and with its swooping curves near the ankle, tongue and heel, you want your jeans to just kiss the top of the shoe, thus showing off as much of it as possible.

You don’t want big bulky jeans, engulfing the entire upper, leaving you with just midsole to admire. Waste of money. These are some of the most creative looking sneakers and colorways and they must be flaunted the way that they deserve. So show them some respect and keep those jeans slim and form-fitting, so that we may all bask in the glory and allow the Flints to create an outfit out of such a basic combo.

2. Jeans, tee and a bomber jacket!

Ok, so we’re going to spice things up a little bit. We’re going to add a little zhuzh to the outfit. We want a simple, subtle, yet complimentary jacket to add to the outfit. Maybe it’s cold where you are and you can’t just do a tee and jeans, but you also don’t feel like going through your closet for an outfit.

Enter the bomber jacket.

Simple, sleek, and functional. It’s lightweight and doesn’t require any maintenance. Just put it on and walk out the door. Here, I wore my smoke grey bomber to compliment the flint grey found in the sneaker. Kept the same white tee and jeans and we have a more complete outfit while still allowing the flints to shine.

3. Tee and denim shorts!

Just because I’m wearing denim shorts doesn’t mean that all other shorts are off limit. These can easily be swapped out with chino shorts or even sweat shorts. But I love the way that denim just works with these sneakers. So if you were to just wear the shorts with a tee and the shoes, you’d be perfectly fine. But as always, I want to find little ways to make the outfit pop even more. Enter these bomb ass socks from Bombas socks. The multiple shades of blue tie in well to the blue in the sneaker and in the shorts. The orange hits also add a bit of contrast and interest to the outfit.

I always believe that you should utilize your accessories to add layers to an outfit. Socks don’t have to just be banished to the end of the bench, as an afterthought when you put on your clothes. Socks can be fun. They can be interesting. Socks can totally make an outfit. So find some great socks that go well with the sneaker, and show them off the next time that you rock these bad boys.

4. Flannel with tee, denim shorts and socks!

Time to zhuzh things up again. Once again we’re going to add a little bit of layering. Yes the previous outfit is perfectly fine, especially with the socks. But what if we wanted to do just a liiiitle bit more. Utilize as much of your wardrobe as you can. Throw on a flannel shirt, and elevate this fit even more. This one plays on the grey once again, but also adds a bit of black to the mix. I’m incorporating more colors with the socks and flannel to create interest and dynamics.

The same way that you will season different components of a meal individually to make the whole better, add accessories, and layer your clothing to make the whole a greater sum. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive shirt or the hottest brand name, but if you incorporate them correctly, you’ll look way more stylish than Joe Shmo over there who thinks he’s fly because his t-shirt cost as much as a house.

5. Tee, track pants and denim jacket!

Say hello to the most comfortable option on the list. Track pants are basically loungewear. Notice I didn’t say sweatpants, because sweatpants tend to have wide legs and feet. Track pants are normally slimmer in fit and have a tapered ankle. Remember before how I said the fit of the pant is crucial because you want as much of this sneaker exposed? Track pants do just that.

But if you’ve noticed the trend that’s been going on in this article, then you know that I can’t just stop at the t-shirt and track pants. Oh no no no. What if you’re going over to a game night with friends, or even a lovely young ladies house and don’t want to look like you just rolled out of bed, but still want to be comfortable and not do too much? Well, why not a denim jacket? Such a stark contrast in the material will throw everyone for a loop because that’s not the norm. People don’t mix denim and track pants. But you’re not like other people. You’re stylish and different. You know how to mix and match materials. You know how to look fly but also stay comfortable.

6. Chinos, denim jacket, tee shirt!

So the lovely lady suggests going to a movie that starts pretty soon, or your friends at game night want to go check out a bar downtown, and you don’t want to waste time looking for an entire new outfit. Well, why not just swap out those comfy track pants for some comfy chinos instead? Who says that athletic sneakers can only be paired with jeans or sweats? Why can’t we do something with a little more elegance?

In the example down below, I think that I’m doing a bang-up job of rocking this well. The chinos add a little bit of refinement to an otherwise rugged outfit with the denim jacket and basketball shoes. So not only were you able to make something out of nothing on the fly, but you still get to look better than your friends.

7. A suit!

And finally, maybe the most controversial outfit that you can pair these lovely sneakers with. A suit. That’s right, you read that correctly. A suit. But I’m not talking with a vest and tie! Oh no no no, now that would be doing too much. But what if you did wear that suit in a more casual manner with a t shirt? I don’t think you’ll just have to stick to the casual white or black sneaker.

This look was inspired by the television sports anchor. You’ve seen them. Especially the black anchors. They love to wear their suits with athletic sneakers. Now, I do think that most athletic sneakers shouldn’t be worn with a suit. But I do think that you can get away with a few. And this is one of them. Charcoal or navy suit will probably work best. Don’t get too busy with what’s on the front of the shirt. Try to keep it as minimal as possible. Instead of letting the shoe do all the talking, strike that perfect balance between it and the suit. Don’t let the tee shirt distract you from that. In my example, I love how well the metallic nature of the suit plays off of the shoes. It blends almost perfectly.

I do think that, if done tastefully, a few athletic sneakers can look amazing with a suit!
