So sports jerseys get a bad rep(rap?) because many individuals believe that they can only be worn during actual sporting events; whether that’s at the game, at a friends house when the game is on, or at a bar that’s showing the game. But in reality, they are a quality garment that can be used to take any outfit over the top!
Disclaimer! I do not go over how to style a football, soccer or hockey jersey….mainly because I don’t own any, but I will create a future post that covers those….eventually. Remember, this is 4 ways to style a sports jersey part 1. Now, on to the tips!
1) Basketball jersey tank top style!
Sun’s out gun’s out! Just in time for the season, a very cool(pun intended) and stylish way to stay cool in the heat! Think of utilizing a basketball jersey as a glorified tank top, especially with how light and breathable the material is. Not only do you get to rep your favorite sports teams and players, but you can also show off those muscle gains or new arm tattoos! My personal favorite and my go-to whenever I want to wear a basketball jersey.
In this example, I wear a Carmelo Anthony New York Knicks jersey with a pair of great jeans from Pacsun and a pair of Ewing 33 Hi’s in the New York Knick’s away color scheme. Throw on a hat if you want and bam! A sick outfit for those hot summer days!
2) Basketball jersey with a flannel!
Ok, so a flannel shirt has to be the manliest top that a guy can possibly own right?! I mean, lumberjacks made them famous! It’s already cool enough to wear a sports jersey, so why not elevate your style level by pairing it with your favorite flannel shirt? The good thing about flannel shirts is that they come in a variety of materials, some light and some heavy, which can be worn during any climate!
In this example, I take yet another basketball jersey and layer it with a nice flannel shirt as if I’m wearing a jacket, and voila, an entirely new outfit! I’ve put together a Dwyane Wade Miami Heat jersey, with the same jeans from Pacsun (sue me), a Red/Grey flannel shirt from Volcom, a pair of Red/Black/White Adidas EQT Support ADV Winter sneakers and another Adidas hat for good measure.
Bonus Tip! Another cool way to style a flannel with a jersey is by simply tying the arms of the flannel from behind you around to the front of your waist. After that, cover the knot with the jersey to complete the piece!
3) Baseball jersey!
We’re over the halfway mark for 4 ways to style a sports jersey. I’ve just started coming around to wearing baseball jerseys and I could not be more upset with myself for waiting so long to do so! I absolutely LOVE how sick it looks and I might even rank it above wearing a basketball jersey. What I like about a baseball jersey is that it can be worn as the singular top or it can be paired with a t-shirt underneath to add some layering when things begin to cool down outside.
In this example, I’m taking an Orange/Black Giancarlo Stanton jersey from the 2017 MLB All Star Weekend Home Run Derby, and layering it with a simple black V-Neck shirt from Express, a pair of light wash stretch jeans from H&M(R.I.P……literally) and a pair of Black/Turquoise Nike Air Bakin’ LE HOH “Ripstop” sneakers. Now, I personally wanted to go with a plain black tee since the jersey has so much going on in it, but if you have a jersey that’s on the simpler side of things, then don’t be afraid to get creative with the t-shirt underneath if you choose to wear one!
Bonus Tip #2: If you already own a jersey but it’s too large for you, I would suggest taking it to a tailor and have them adjust it to fit your body. That’s what I did with my Stanton jersey and now it fits me perfectly!
4) Basketball jersey over a hoodie!
Now I will admit that I’m not the biggest fan of this style, but it is something that you can get away with and hell you might pull it off better than I did. I at least wanted to provide you guys with another idea using the resources that I have……………….not much else to say on this look but here it is anyway.
In this example, I’m wearing a red zip-up hoodie underneath a Chris Bosh Miami Heat jersey. I coupled that with a pair of cutoff light wash denim jeans that I’ve cuffed to create denim shorts. On my feet is the Nike Zoom Glove in the Miami Heat colorway. Bone Adidas hat makes another cameo appearance.
I’ve been a fan of wearing a sports jersey to elevate my look for years now and I think that you guys should give it a try. It’s not just for the game or game-related events. Just the quality of the piece alone should inform you of how awesome they are. I own 5 jerseys and I can’t wait to add more to my collection!
